This morning, at 7:50am, when i'm still lazing around the bed, then there's a "BEEP" from my cell phone, it's a text message from my course-mate. It wrote: Today, all DPLI students are require to attend a talk on PERMATApintar at 9am.So all classes today will be canceled. I was like, ohmygod, not another BORING TALK again!! Don't want to lift my lazybum from the bed as it is just after rain, what a lovely weather to stay in the bed abit longer. At 8am, after my roomie pester me to get up, i finally pull myself up and go wash myself and get ready. Manage to drench myself with coffee to keep me FRESH and AWAKE! We were early as the talk started at 9:30am instead of 9am...this thing always happen.
Anyway, the two speakers are from the Johns Hopkins University, Center for Talented Youth (CTY), they are Dr.Julian Jones and Dr.Patricia Wallace to talk about talented or gifted children and how to nurture them.Well the talk start off with a overview of what is talented youth from Dean of Faculty of Education, Prof. Datin Dr. Siti Rahayah Ariffin (my first encounter with her :) hehe) Well well, she gave us idea on what talented youth are like, how they would behave when they are put into normal school, they usually are students with behaviorism problem coz they are bored with what they already know at their age, this is why they don't pay attention in class and whole lot more scenarios that is why it is important to discover these children, nurture them and put them into learning institution that is on par with their level and abilities. Then, Dr.Julian talked on the programs brought by CTY where they organize summer camp to gather all these talented children, create activities for them and to develop their intelligence into another level. All these children that they are focusing are mainly children of 9 to 15 years old. After that, Dr.Patricia talked on the softwares&programs created by CTY research team of JHU and showed us what and how the programs work for different level of children.
In conjunction with this talk, our University is creating a center for Young and Talented children called PERMATApintar to be launching on next monday 2/3/09 to have them undergo trainings or rather a learning camp for them to develop their intelligence. I'm really impressed with the talk i went today and it really enlighten me about Talented children and i definitely will spread the news about this to everyone i know so that if they happen to encounter with children like these around them, they will know where to put them and nurture them.

Hi ad, thanks for posting this issue. Yes i've heard of this gifted and talented children. But i think alot of parents don't really come to know their children might be gifted and so most talents are lost. The child looses interest and venture into other things. There are traits that we can tell. It's really cool and i wished i had attended the talk too. :) I'm really passionate with education in general. If i'm not mistaken there r tests to assess these children. I rmb there was a tv programme on this young boy who became a doctor at a very young age, i dont rmb the name of the programme. Probably u might have seen it too. That's an example of what u mentioned in your topic. If i'm not mistaken also that these "special" children are likely to be misdiagnosed as ADHD, oh i rmb another young malay boy who could solve very tough math questions...forgot his name...cute boy though. And if u have watched National Geographic's My Brilliant Brain series- Born Genius which talks about the young pianist Marc Yu is also another example. Heheheh i hope i don't bore u with my comments... :P
ReplyDeletei am not sure maybe u knew abt this since it's happening in UKM. Just to share with u.
